圣诞节(Christmas)本身是一个宗教节，用来庆祝耶稣的诞辰，因而又名耶诞节，位于每年12月25日，这是西方国家一年中最重要的节日。在圣诞节，大部分的天主教教堂都会先在12月24日的平安夜及12月25日凌晨举行子夜弥撒；而基督教的另一分支——东正教的圣诞节庆祝则在每年的1月7日。现如今，圣诞节已经成为欧美国家的公共假日，有点类似于中国的春节，是举家团圆的日子。而且近年来，该节日在亚洲国家也非常流行。

有句英语谚语:Christmas comes but once a year(圣诞节每年只有一次。)其喻意是什么呢。若补上另一句,谚语的深层涵义就不难理解了。这另一句是:but when it comes it brings good cheer句中的good cheer是指good food and drink。此句意为:"圣诞节来临时,它也带来美酒佳肴。"言外之意是:圣诞节到了,人们能大快朵颐,酒足饭饱啦。由此可知,上句谚语喻意则是劝告那些受了挫折而垂头丧气的人要"振作精神"或"别发愁",(像圣诞节这样万民欢庆的)"好日子总会到来的。"所以,现在英美人常说:Christmas should be a time of great cheer(圣诞节应是欢乐的时刻。)
英美人将Christmas当作重要的节日,是因为他们绝大多数人信奉基督教,认为Jesus (耶稣)是救世主,会给他们带来幸福和希望。因此,在过圣诞节时,英美人最愿花钱大操大办,购买食物和礼品,且要全家团圆,欢聚一堂,如同我们过大年。上面的谚语由此而来。
不过,耶稣诞生于何年何月,Bible(《圣经》)上没有记载,而是由后人推定的。由Christmas一词的构成便可知晓。
Christmas是由christ和-mas(即:Mass)两词合成的。Christ系源自于犹太的希伯来语(Hebrew Messiah)一词,汉语音译为"弥赛亚"。"弥赛亚"是犹太人期待的"救世主"。该词这一层意思是:The one/new baby was sent from God(新生圣婴被上帝派送于世。)希腊人将Messiah只译了一层意思:christ(救世主)。后一半mas来自罗马拉丁语missia,英语写成Mass Mas(s)意为to send。两词合成后,意为:the sending of the sent one/ new baby或The sent one/new baby has been sent by God(应派送的人已由上帝派出了。)所以现在英语里有go to Mass(望弥撒)的词语。
以后由christ又衍生出christian一词,据说这样译才包含了Messiah的全部语义。其全义是:The new baby was born at Christmas and the man he grew up to be(圣婴诞生于耶诞弥撒日,以后成长为人世之主。)"耶诞弥撒日"到底在哪月哪日。直到公元4世纪左右才将每年12月25日定为"耶稣诞辰日"。英国在13世纪以前一直将这一天当作一年的开始,因此圣诞节期(Christmas-tide/Christmas-time)的全程日期是从12月24日至下一年1月1日或1月6日。源始于此。
正因为英美人将此日视为"纪念耶稣诞生的弥撒日",所以有的辞书上注释为:Christmas is the time of the sending of Christ或Christmas celebrates the time when Christ was sent by God
